Come celebrate the dessert-inspired classical album of Brooklyn-based flutist Annie Wu! Joined by pianist Markus Kaitila, Annie will play selections from her latest album, stitched together with stories that explore nostalgia, childhood, and the not-too-sweet life of an artist.

The show will be 1-hour with a potluck of not-too-sweet-inspired desserts, and drinks for sale. We welcome not-too-sweet dessert contributions!

ABOUT THE ALBUM

Merging the culinary, literary, and visual art worlds, Brooklyn-based flutist Annie Wus latest classical album Not Too Sweet named after the cheeky Chinese phrase for the perfect dessert presents flute music through a dessert- and diasporic- lens. With an autobiographical approach to her curation, including movie soundtracks from her childhood and vocal arrangements exploring nostalgia and memory, Wu brings an intimate, personal sound, story, and look to tunes made even sweeter by shadows of some more complicated flavors and sounds.

ANNIE WU Of flutist Annie Wu, The Mercury News said, This artist, it seems, can do anything. In 2015, Wu won first prize in the Astral Artists national audition and joined Astrals roster as one of their youngest artists. She is the first prize winner of the James Pappoutsakis Flute Competition, Yamaha Young Performing Artist Competition, and YoungArts National Competition, and was named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. As a concerto soloist, Wu has performed with the San Francisco Symphony, Vienna International Orchestra, California Symphony, Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, West Virginia Symphony, Livermore-Amador Symphony, Diablo Symphony Orchestra, and the San Jose Chamber Orchestra, and recitals have taken her to Bostons Jordan Hall, Strathmores Mansion, and D.C.s Phillips Collection, among others.

Wu’s projects explore the narrative possibilities of music across mediums. Highlights include a chef-collaboration on a mushroom themed concert-dinner, a dessert- and diasporic- themed album of popular flute tunes,and a guest faculty spot at the Juilliard School teaching her own course on the intersections of music and literature. She holds a B.A. magna cum laude in Comparative Literature from Harvard University and an M.M. from New England Conservatory as a part of the Harvard-NEC Dual Degree Program. MARKUS KAITILA (b. Helsinki, 1992) has appeared as a soloist with Joutseno Art Summer, Wratislavia, Queens College, and Jackson Heights chamber orchestras, and One World and New Amsterdam Symphony orchestras, under conductors such as Tong Chen and Charles Neidich. He won Bronze Prize in the 2nd WPTA Finland International Piano Competition 2020 and First Prize at the Khler-Osbahr piano competition (Duisburg) in 2013.

Markus has performed in Wiener Saal (Salzburg), Theater Duisburg and Jahrhunderthalle Bochum, Klavier-Festival Ruhr, Muziekcentrum Enschede, and

New Yorks Mannes, Merkin and Carnegie Halls. He has completed residencies at Music Academy of the West, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, and Pianofest in the Hamptons. Markus has studied at Sibelius Academy, Folkwang University of the Arts, Aaron Copland School of Music at CUNY Queens, and NYU Steinhardt, with Hui-Ying Liu-Tawaststjerna, Till Engel, Nina Lelchuk, and Eteri Andjaparidze. He is pursuing a doctorate at The Hartt School, University of Hartford, with Jose Ramos Santana.
